What’s In My Kid’s Smoothie | The Secret Ingredients

What's in my Kid's Smoothie. Smoothie Recipes for Moms. Smoothie Recipes for Kids. Healthy Smoothie Recipes. Meal Replacement Smoothies. Chia Seed, Flaxseed, Turmeric, Cumin, Apple Cider Vinegar, Crushed PineappleWe all know that nutrition is important for our daily lives as moms. But through the chaos of it all, it can be hard to make sure you’re getting all the “good stuff” into your kids too. Cash was, and still is an extremely fickle eater which was a constant stress for me until the #MomWinning moment I decided to start serving Smoothies.

My kid wouldn’t eat food

I remember talking to my pediatrician, way back when about Cash not eating enough which made me concerned. My doctor assured me that so long as he was growing properly along with the toddler expectations he was okay. That did make me feel better, but what made me the most concerned was not the amount of food, per-say, but the quality of food he did eat. He was one of those kids who just wanted to eat the same 3 things all day long; oatmeal, bananas, and string cheese. I knew he wasn’t getting all of the proper nutrients he needed which was a big stress for me and my husband. We would have standoffs with him at dinner because he wouldn’t touch his plate. The plate finally full of green vegetables and protein…This, of course, caused a rift in our parenting strategy because Billy and I both had different feelings about how we should solve this problem.

We started a Smoothie Experiment

At the start of the new year, we began a fun little Rainbow Unit in Toddler School. Cash loved to learn so I was already winning. We decided to “eat the rainbow” and make a Smoothie per color. My solution was born! Cash, and Wyatt both turned out to be Smoothie lovers. #luckyme.

It became a Daily Routine

The Smoothie Experiment was such a big hit that their morning Smoothie became an expectation. We added into our daily routine as a “second breakfast” at 10:00 am every day. They wake up about 7 am so they’re ready for a pick-me-up right around that time. This is also a great time because they’re hungry, it’s not quite lunch time and if I don’t give them something they’re not going to have a good next few hours of behavior until nap time. So really, it’s in my best interest too! See how I build our Toddler Schedules in THIS POST.

What’s in My Kid’s Smoothie

Okay, time for the goods. We don’t really mix it up as much as we used to, but they seem to be fine with that. Most of our Smoothie making revolves around the same key ingredients which I believe give them the daily dose of nutrients they need. A Smoothie should never replace a full meal, but let’s face it, as a mom if I have to, I’m hitting that drive-thru, so I take comfort in knowing that we have our daily Smoothie routine!

What's in my Kid's Smoothie. Smoothie Recipes for Moms. Smoothie Recipes for Kids. Healthy Smoothie Recipes. Meal Replacement Smoothies. Chia Seed, Flaxseed, Turmeric, Cumin, Apple Cider Vinegar, Crushed PineappleWhat we use daily

These Ingredients build our Smoothie Foundation

  • Crushed Pineapple- Base
  • Organic Spinach/Mixed Greens- Substance
  • Organic Fruit Smoothie Mix {from Costco}- Flavor
  • Vanilla Yogurt- Smoothness
  • 4 Cups Water- Quantity

These Ingredients are my “Super Secret” additives that give a Smoothie a little healthy kick

Now, I want to be very clear that I am not a certified nutritionist. This post is about what I put in our Smoothies, but not necessarily what you should put in yours. I had all of these ingredients approved by my pediatrician and did my own extensive research. My kids are not allergic to anything, nor do they have any aversions. You should most certainly consult your doctor and begin with small doses before you build a huge Smoothie routine.

Now go forth and get yourself a top secret healthy Smoothie! You’ll all feel better knowing all the “good stuff” made it into your healthy kids!

What is your Favorite Smoothie Ingredient? Let me know in the comments!

5 Things I’m Making Time for this Spring | JORD Watch Giveaway

5 Things I'm Making Time for This Spring. Motherhood Mother's Day Jord Watches GiveawayI think we all know that Motherhood can take its toll on all of us. About this time of year is when I realize I really need a break. It’s officially time to take some much needed “me-time” and pay attention to the small things and the big picture. What better way to remember the important details than looking at a gorgeous wrist watch?

Right when I needed a Spring pick-me-up, JORD Watches sent me a collaboration opportunity. Thank you so much JORD for your impeccable timing 😉 I’ve been inspired to reflect {into that beautiful timepiece face} and review some Spring priorities.

5 Things I’m Making Time for this Spring

Christmas is packed away and the taxes are done… I can’t really remember anything that happened between those two things, can you? It is such a blur and it is such an overwhelming world we live in daily. I find it a constant struggle to keep a focus on the little, but important stuff. So now that I have some time {suspended gracefully on my wrist} and the weather is changing, I’m making more time for a few things I’ve been neglecting.

Holding Hands– I have two precious little baby Hooligans whose hands are getting bigger every day. I nearly forgot how it felt to just hold one for a walk. Today, Wyatt saw me put on my new watch and said, “You look pretty Mommy!” which of course melted my heart. {Thanks, JORD for making me pretty}

Storytime- I confess, the winter was a hugely successful time for my Etsy Shop. Every single time I sat down I had my yarn in hand, too occupied with multitasking to turn storybook pages. Now that the weather is warmer, there will be fewer hats to make. Perhaps I’ll get a massage too…

Coffee Breaks- If you’re following me on Instagram you might have caught my epic battle with the sewing machine… It was that moment I realized I needed to initiate more coffee breaks in my life. Time to just stare out the window and breathe. {Or stare into this pristine watch face which sparkles}

Showers- Winter is over {fingers crossed} and I no longer need to avoid that dreaded, “step out into the cold bathroom” end to a warm shower. I can finally enjoy one, a longer one even, and not have to immediately jump straight back into my huge sweatpants and sweaters. I packed up all my sweaters just the other day and am now rocking all my Spring t-shirts. The best part… fully exposed wrists to show off my new arm-candy.

Family- Speaking of arm-candy, I’m pretty sure there is a third guy who lives in this house somewhere. He’s that same guy I toss the two little boys at when he comes home from work so that I can finally start work. I should probably take some time to reflect on him a little too 😉 Come to think of it, I bet he’d love a matching Wooden Wrist Watch so that we could be twins… he does always threaten those matching jumpsuits for when we get older… a nice new JORD Men’s Watch would be a good start.

20 Minute Early Morning Workout | Morning Routine

20 minute early morning workout. Easy, Fun and Low IntensityMornings in most households are hectic. Mornings in a house with kids are insane. Between wake ups, breakfast, dressing, and wrestling it’s no wonder you leave the house frazzled and questioning your own sanity. And after work is more of the same! Playing chauffeur, chef, and mediator by the end of the day the last thing you want to do is a workout.

But I have a solution for you. Really, it’s a trick that works every time.

Are you ready?

Get up half an hour before the kids (I can hear you grumbling but stay with me) and rock a quick, twenty-minute workout at home. That’s the key. This amazing tip works for two reasons.

Reason #1

Working out at home is not only genius it’s practical (read more about this here). It saves you time traveling and gets your workout done in half the time.

Reason #2

You can get in a workout, in peace in under thirty minutes which will leave you jacked up (hello endorphins!) and ready to conquer the day. You’ll feel better all morning knowing that you’ve already accomplished something and you won’t have the constant thought of “when can I squeeze in my workout” puttering around in your brain all day.

This simple trick will keep you fit, healthy but more importantly sane (click here to read why!)

This early morning workout is quick, effective and only requires a resistance band and your bodyweight (click here for more awesome bodyweight exercises). You can throw it in a couple mornings a week and it will leave you feeling energized, accomplished and a little bit sweaty 😉

20 Minute Energy Boosting Workout Routine

Click here to watch a video demo.

Sliding Curtsy Lunge 10 reps/side
Paused Squats 12
Seated Band High Row 12
Band Shoulder Press & Pull Apart 12
Sliding Hamstring Curl 10
Deadbug 10 reps/side

20 minute early morning workout. Easy, Fun and Low Intensity

Perform each exercise in order for the prescribed number of repetitions without rest between exercises (though grab water if you need it!). At the end of the last exercise, rest for 1 minute and then repeat for a total of three rounds.

A few things to keep in mind

This workout isn’t overly intense. There’s no jumping, no heavy weights and no insane burpee countdowns (hello, it’s like 5 am?!). This means that you can do this workout easily on an empty stomach and have breakfast to refuel after.

However, if you’re the type of person who gets dizzy easily mow down a quick bar so there’s something in your stomach.

In case you missed it, all the exercises are demonstrated here.

This workout is meant to get your blood flowing, your muscles working and generally boost your energy. The goal isn’t to go “balls to the wall” and be half dead on the floor when your kids get up! Go through the repetitions and made every muscular contraction count.

Resistance bands: I personally love and use this red band but any will do! I adore bands because they’re cheap, don’t take up much room and you can do a variety of exercises with them (click here to know why everyone should own resistance bands).

A Year in Review {Kelso Family 2015}

A Year in Review. 2015 was a good year for the Kelso Family
with a new member joining the team and with a big move up to Stayton we’ve been
pretty busy. The year starts off with Wyatt in January, a recluse February
{since nobody is leaving the house with a newborn!} and a Spring filled with
MOVING. We eventually get settled in and projects done around May and begin to leave the house
for some fun. The summer and fall are where Cash gets to see the most action as
his brother is more mobile and fun to play with!

Special thanks to Kelsea Joann Photography for putting up with us again during our annual family photo shoot!
Let’s take a look at 2015….
January: The
Story of Wyatt Nickolas Coach
We anxiously await the arrival of little Kelso #2 who decides to make a quick entrance.

February: Entertaining
a Toddler with a Newborn
{Cash spends a LOT of time with Mom & Brother}Thanks to many family members, Cash is not forgotten while we spend every minute breastfeeding and packing.

March: Goodbye
Creswell
! You probably noticed that there are ZERO blog posts between
February and April. In a 6 day stretch we’d had a baby and sold our house… so
attention was elsewhere. Then, once we got to Stayton at the end of March it
took us 8 weeks to get internet! We were plenty busy moving in though… but I
had to take some major business hits unfortunately. We survived though 😉

April: Movin’ On In Series
The many house projects begin! Painting, Fixing and Unpacking make for a very busy April.

May: Toddler School begins! We finally settle in enough to get back on track with Toddler Education! We make it to the Library often, we introduce The Mess Mat and all sorts of sensory play!

June: We get outside! Our Father’s
Day River Trip
is one among many outdoor adventures with Dad. Cash reunites with his first love… WATER.

July: The Family Adventures Begin! July
4th in Creswell
, The
Family Cabin
, Cash
turns 2
{Super Hero Training}and so much more!

August: Gigs
in the Grass
, Petting
Zoo
, The
Gilbert House
, Pirate
Month
. These are just a few of our many adventures over the summer.

September: A Family wedding leads us to a super fun California
Trip
where we get to meet great grandparents!

October: Pumpkin
Patch
& Halloween. Some great new Salem discoveries and DIY projects make for a very memorable October. This one will be tough to beat!

November: Mommy
Made Craft Shows
& Baking Month. Also known as the Shopping season, which means Mom kicks into high gear for crafting. A new Mommy Made Team and Etsy store keep her plenty busy in addition to Toddler School.

December: Handmade
Kelso Christmas 2015
. We decided to go all handmade this year for our Tree. The boys get to enjoy 4 whole weeks of craft projects which end with a grand finale TREE REVEAL!

The Sweet Side of Life

Welp…we officially have 2 KIDS {Morning Muse}

I guess I should have expected this realization to eventually come, but not exactly smack me in the face. Perhaps all parents of more than one child know what I’m talking about and they need no explanation…. but for those of us new parents… let me help prepare you.
I have always had two sons…but up until now it was “Cash and the baby,” “The Toddler and the Infant.” NOW, there are two KIDS….
Last week Wyatt had his 6 month check and passed everything with flying colors…. he is only 6 pounds lighter than his brother and 7 inches shorter, by all accounts he is huge. Regardless of that we received all sorts of green lights to move right along with him…. Sheesh where did the time go? pretty sure I was just in the hospital! He is now sitting up, rolling over, and doing a whole lot more than just laying there sleeping, eating or crying.

Within one week of the well-check we have rebuilt the crib in Cash’s (well not anymore! Now it’s the “Boy’s”) room, pulled down the *walker, began feeding Wyatt in the high chair and now all of the sudden Wyatt get’s a “choice”….
This smack in the face not only hit me but Cash as well. Not only have we completely redone the physical life structure (without even really noticing) that has been going on for 6 months by moving brother into big brothers room, taking over the high chair and letting this little kid cruise around free range** but now this little BEING who has been just along for the ride up until now gets a CHOICE?!
Cash and I were doing our normal bedtime reading the other night and Wyatt reached for a specific book, which I began to read with him sitting on my lap and Cash buzzing around the bedroom listening. Cash comes trucking over with a different book that he wanted me to read, as he usually does and I said, “This was brother’s choice and we’ll read yours next.”
That sentence…. That sentence that told Cash he now had to WAIT for after brother’s choice. Cash has always been a great big brother, and of course still is. But his little face of confusion, though adorable, ushered in a completely new chapter for him… You me the guy who gets to sleep in your room, eat on the couch, scream as loud as he wants to INSIDE the house and can get picked up without saying please now gets a CHOICE too? Never before until now did the baby get a choice that Cash had to accommodate.  But the KID does. The second KID can make choices, has a preference and gets a turn to choose. Yes, Cash always had to wait on mom who was feeding, changing or dealing with the baby, but never the KID’s choice…. Onward and upward we go! We now officially have two titan opinions running this mom around, all of the sudden…
So parents who currently have a Toddler and a baby be warned. It sneaks up on you. Hopefully you have such an awesome toddler that they will embrace the “sudden” change as easily as Cash has, with a mere look of confusion and then a shoulder shrug followed with a criss-cross sit down and thumb suck sigh…
Just a morning muse from yours truly about the ever changing and phenomenal word of parenting. We’ll see how this plays out! I’m off to redesign our weekly schedules and activities to accommodate educating another KID as opposed to a baby. Oh yeah, I’ve done this once before!

Here is my current blog reading list as I go into this week:
10 differences first and second time moms- Toulouse and Tonic
When your baby turns 1, it makes you pause… – Tune My Heart

*Walkers: I am fully aware of the controversies surrounding walker use. We use it responsibly and never leave him unattended in it, or actually in it at all for more than 15 minute sessions.
**We have zero drop of levels in our home.
