Let’s dive into the new year with all the Adventures for Oregon Kids in January we’ve done! We do a ton of amazing things around our very own state of Oregon. My goal is to start blogging all about it this year, starting in January. This post is the landing post, and then I’ll link out to each Adventure we’ve done during this month. We haven’t done them all, but we hope to, so they’re on our list! Exploring Oregon in January offers a magical experience for kids and families alike. Despite the chilly weather, the state is full of exciting activities, stunning places, and engaging festivals. Here’s a list of adventures that can turn any gray day into a memorable journey.
1. Visit the Oregon Zoo
Located in Portland, the Oregon Zoo is home to over 1,800 animals. January is a perfect time to visit, with fewer crowds and special winter exhibits. Kids will love seeing the polar bears and learning about wildlife conservation. We’ve taken #MySweetandSticky there multiple times throughout the year. They do love a good summer visit, and their school takes them on a field trip in the Spring. But, winter is extra special because they have the Zoo Lights set up for Christmas. I put this on the January list because December is obviously very busy… if you can swing it before they take them down, the Zoo Lights are a great after-Christmas Adventure.

2. Explore the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)
We’ve visited OMSI many times throughout the year, but since it’s a big indoor facility, Janaury is our favorite. OMSI offers interactive exhibits that spark curiosity and creativity. From the planetarium to the hands-on science labs, there’s something for every young mind to discover. Don’t miss the special winter-themed workshops.
3. Discover Crater Lake National Park
On our list! Crater Lake, known for its stunning blue color, transforms into a winter wonderland. Enjoy snowshoeing or a scenic drive around the rim. The park offers ranger-led programs that are educational and fun for kids.
4. Attend the Portland Winter Light Festival
This dazzling event lights up the city with stunning art installations and performances. It’s a magical experience that captivates children and adults alike. Wrap up warm and enjoy the colorful displays. The lights slightly change from year to year.
5. Go Skiing or Snowboarding at Mt. Hood
We have not been skiing or snowboarding yet, but it’s on the list! Mt. Hood is a winter sports paradise. Whether your kids are beginners or seasoned skiers, the mountain offers lessons and trails suitable for all levels. Enjoy a day of adventure on the slopes.
6. Visit the Children’s Museum of Eastern Oregon
Located in Pendleton, this museum offers interactive exhibits designed specifically for kids. From a play farm to a science lab, children can explore and learn in a playful environment.
7. Experience the Newport Seafood & Wine Festival
Cash does love his seafood… While primarily an adult event, the festival offers family-friendly activities and a chance to explore Newport’s charming coastal town. Kids will enjoy the beach and the Oregon Coast Aquarium nearby.
8. Explore the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum
In McMinnville, this museum houses an impressive collection of aircraft and spacecraft. Kids can sit in a cockpit, learn about aviation history, and even try the flight simulator.
9. Attend the Bend Winterfest
This annual festival features ice carving, live music, and a kids’ area with crafts and games. It’s a festive way to enjoy Bend’s vibrant community and winter weather. Another Bucket List Adventure we have not made it out to yet, but we hope to soon! We’re waiting for the boys to be just a bit older, and for it to work around our basketball schedule.
10. Go Cosmic Snow Tubing at Mt. Hood Skibowl
Now this we’ve DONE and it was AMAZING! I’ll post our link to it SOON.
Mt. Hood Skibowl’s Snow Tube Park, located at Skibowl East, offers the only conveyor-assisted tubing on Mt. Hood! We make tubing easy since there is no need for you to hike up the hills.  Just jump on one of two conveyors that will take you to the top of the start. Then enjoy a heart-pounding ride to the bottom in our specially designed tubes.
These adventures are sure to create lasting memories and bring warmth to the cold winter days in Oregon. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, January is a fantastic time to explore what this beautiful state has to offer.
