Our first stop on the way to the Caves of Hella was Urriðafoss, a wide and impressive waterfall. Iceland is dotted with these natural wonders, and it’s one of the reasons why renting your own car is a must. You’ll want to pull over and enjoy the breathtaking scenery whenever you can. Plus, it gives you the freedom to stop for those impromptu family photo ops – or in our case, a Capri Sun break!

A little tip from me to you: pack some rechargeable hand warmers. I snagged mine off Amazon, and they were a lifesaver in the crisp Icelandic air. The boys stayed toasty, and I didn’t have to worry about frozen fingers as I snapped pictures.

We arrived at the Caves of Hella just in time for our noon tour. These caves are Iceland’s oldest archaeological remains, and the history here is as thick as the mystery surrounding them. Some say they date back even further than the settlement of the Nordic Vikings. Intriguing, right?

During our guided tour, we marveled at the ancient crosses, wall carvings, and even carved seats that seemed to whisper stories of the past.
