Exploring Perlan Natural Museum with Kids

Today, I’m thrilled to share our exciting escapade to the Perlan Natural Museum in Reykjavík, Iceland. If you’re on the hunt for a kid-friendly outing that combines fun and learning, buckle up! This post is all about our visit to this incredible museum where nature’s wonders come to life, and kiddos are guaranteed to have a blast.

Perlan might just be the coolest hangout under Iceland’s sun—or clouds, because, you know, weather. You could easily lose track of time and spend the whole day there. We wrapped up Day 2 of our week-long Iceland trip at Perlan, so it was already dark when we sat down for dinner under the dome! It’s located at 105 Reykjavík, just a stone’s throw from adventure, and it’s open from 10 AM to 6 PM. It’s a spot where learning and fun come together, with some seriously amazing exhibits. Just a heads up, tickets are $35 for adults and $20 for kids, which is totally worth it for an unforgettable day.

1. A Trip to the Látrabjarg Cliff (Without the Cliffhanger!)

First up on our itinerary was the breathtaking Látrabjarg Cliff exhibit. Now, I know what you’re thinking—how do you get kids to appreciate a massive seabird cliff? Easy! The exhibit is like a real-life nature documentary, minus the remote controls. My boys stood in awe, craning their necks to take in the towering model of Europe’s largest seabird cliff. It was a perfect chance to talk about nature and the beauty of our feathered friends, without having to dodge any actual bird droppings!

2. Ice Cave Glacier Tunnel: Chills and Thrills

Next, we braved the Glacier Exhibition of Iceland, featuring the one-of-a-kind 100-meter-long Ice Cave Glacier Tunnel. Picture this: you, your kids, and a tunnel made entirely of ice. It’s like Elsa’s castle, but without the singing. My boys were thrilled to sit on the ice throne, imagining themselves as kings of the frozen north. This interactive exhibit walks you through the history and future of Iceland’s glaciers, making it both educational and, let’s be honest, pretty darn cool.

3. Get Fired Up with the Volcano Show

After chilling out in the ice tunnel, we heated things up with the Volcano Show, a thrilling insight into the Geldingadalir volcanic eruption of 2021. The show is a fiery mix of science and spectacle, and it’s a fantastic way to explain the power of nature to the little ones. My boys were glued to the screen, eyes wide, as they learned about the mighty Fagradalsfjall. It’s not every day you get to see a volcano up close without worrying about singed eyebrows!

4. Dive into Water in Icelandic Nature

Next up on our list was the Water in Icelandic Nature exhibit. This one’s all about celebrating water and its role in the world, and it was a hit with both kids and adults. My boys were zipping around the interactive displays, super excited to learn about water’s magic and why it’s so important. It’s a fun way to teach kids about conservation and the environment without being repetitive. Plus, those huge water mites they sat on were pretty gross!

5. Áróra: Dance with the Northern Lights

We couldn’t check out of Perlan without catching Áróra, the world’s first interactive planetarium film. It’s an amazing visual show where you can practically dance with the Northern Lights, all thanks to Iceland’s top-notch photographers and musicians. Plus, the planetarium digs into the science and myths of the Northern Lights, so it’s perfect for anyone who’s curious.

6. Observation Deck: A View to Remember

Before wrapping up our visit, we headed to the Observation Deck. It offers a jaw-dropping 360° view of Reykjavík and its surrounding beauty. Up there, you feel like you’re on top of the world, with the whole city at your feet. It was the perfect spot to snap some family photos and take in the breathtaking panorama.

7. Dining Under the Dome

Finally, we refueled at the Perlan restaurant, nestled under a glass dome with a 360° view. The menu, crafted by top chefs, did not disappoint. My boys devoured the famous pizza, while I savored the chicken salad. It was the perfect way to end our adventure, with delicious food and stunning views all around.
