Ah, the sweet and sticky chaos of traveling with kids! As you might know, our family is always on the lookout for the next big adventure. This time, our travels took us to the enchanting lands of Iceland. Picture this: fresh off the plane, our first stop was the Viking World Museum in Reykjanesbær, Iceland. Why the Viking World Museum, you ask? Well, it’s not just any museum; it’s a portal to a time when Vikings ruled the seas and legends were born. Imagine stepping into a world where history comes alive and your kids’ imaginations run wild with tales of longboats and daring voyages.

8:30 AM – Viking World Buffet Breakfast

Before we dive into the details of our Viking escapade, let me share a little secret: we had the privilege of experiencing a private buffet breakfast, right under a Viking ship! Yes, you heard that right. A breakfast adventure that set the tone for an unforgettable day. So, grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and let me take you on a journey through the Viking World Museum, where history and family fun collide.

A Viking Feast: Breakfast Buffet Under the Ship

Our day at the Viking World Museum started with a hearty breakfast that could satisfy the hungriest of Viking warriors. Located at Víkingabraut 1, 260 Reykjanesbær, Iceland, the museum opens its doors to adventurous souls seeking a taste of the past. But before the public rush, we had a special reservation for our group of 11. I had called ahead the week before and secured this private buffet breakfast, ensuring we had the place to ourselves.

Now, let’s talk about the breakfast itself. The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of Icelandic pastries. As the boys, affectionately known as My Sweet & Sticky, eagerly filled their plates, I couldn’t help but soak in the moment. There we were, dining under the hull of the Íslendingur, a replica of the Gokstad Viking ship. This magnificent vessel, suspended one and a half meters above us, was a testament to the craftsmanship and adventurous spirit of the Vikings. The cost? Just $21 per adult and $15 per child, covering both breakfast and museum admission—a steal for the experience!

Discovering the Viking World Museum

The Íslendingur: A Ship of Legends

After a breakfast fit for a Norse god, it was time to explore the heart of the Viking World Museum. The Íslendingur, a replica of the Gokstad Viking ship, is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the museum. This ship isn’t just a display piece; it’s a story. In 2000, it sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, celebrating Leif Ericsson’s legendary voyage.

The boys were spellbound, their eyes wide with wonder as they imagined themselves as brave Viking voyagers. It was a magical moment that highlighted the beauty of traveling with kids—seeing history through their eyes, where every detail sparks their imagination. THEY HAVE PROPS for the kids to play dress-up!

Vikings — The North Atlantic Saga

Next, we ventured into the exhibition titled “Vikings — The North Atlantic Saga,” on loan from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. This exhibit is a treasure trove of Viking artifacts and stories. As we wandered through the displays, I was captivated by the tales of exploration and survival. The boys, on the other hand, were drawn to the interactive elements, where they could learn about Viking life through play. It was a perfect blend of education and entertainment—a true highlight for families visiting the museum. Unfortunately, it’s all dark in this walk through, and the pictures did not turn out the best. There is also a lot of nudity, so I’m not posting that here. 😉

Heathen Reburial Ceremony: A Glimpse into Viking Rituals

Our journey through Viking history wouldn’t be complete without exploring the museum’s temporary exhibition, which opened on December 1, 2010. Here, we witnessed a recreation of a heathen reburial ceremony, a ritual once performed for a body excavated at Hafurbjarnarstaðir in 1868. It was an eye-opening experience, offering insights into the spiritual beliefs of the Vikings. The boys were curious and asked endless questions, sparking conversations about history and culture.

After breakfast we were heading to the Giantess Cave, where it is traditional to write a letter to teh Giantess, Sigga. During Breakfast (I had planned to do it on the plane, but didn’t) I had the boys write their letters. You’re supposed to ask for a wish or a prayers for your time spent in Iceland.
