Well, he is officially known as “The Decade” now in our house… Cash has turned TEN. Since his birth, I’ve pretty much been hoping one of my kids would allow me to throw a 9 3/4 Birthday party, and it looks like I lucked out! Cash just so happened to be into Harry Potter just in time.
How to Throw a Harry Potter Birthday Party
Throwing a Harry Potter-themed birthday party is a great way to celebrate your little wizard or witch because just about EVERYONE can get on board… (The Hogwarts Express that is!) It’s such a classic, there are tons of options and ways to do it. Here are some tips on how to make it an epic party regardless of which book you use:
- Invitations: Set the tone for the party with some informative invitations. You must let your guests know what they’re getting into prior to the party so they can prepare. A handful of friends had not seen the movies, so advance notice allowed them time to catch up and come aboard the party train.
- Decorations: Transform your home into Hogwarts, or any other scenery from the epic storyline. Hang up some Hogwarts banners, make floating candles, and cover the tables with Hogwarts house colors. Don’t forget to create a platform 9 3/4 entrance somewhere in your party space though, that’s a must-have.
- Food: No Harry Potter party is complete without some wizard-themed treats. Make some chocolate frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, and Butterbeer. You can also serve up some pumpkin pasties, treacle tarts, and cauldron cakes.
- Activities: Keep your guests entertained with some Harry Potter-themed activities. You can set up a sorting hat station, make your own wands, or host a game of quidditch. Don’t forget to have a Harry Potter movie marathon playing at the after-party. You could also go big and create an elaborate Escape Room Style, Who-Done-It Mystery Game… Which is exactly what we did!

A Who Done It Magical Mystery – The Mystical Wand of Fire
Cash loves himself a good investigation into the unknown. He challenged me to create an entire Escape Room themed around Harry Potter. AND IT WAS A JOY! I felt like Mad-Eye building the maze; it took me months to get it right!
With these tips, your Harry Potter-themed birthday party is sure to be a hit. Remember to have fun and enjoy the magic of the wizarding world!
