As a blogger mom of A Cotton Kandi Life, I used to homeschool for preschool when the boys were little. They’re heading into 5th and 6th grade now, and you may lovingly know them as My Sweet & Sticky. Today, I’m excited to share how we practiced spelling words at home for Pre-K, a journey that has transformed my boys into stellar spellers, all while making learning a fun adventure.

How We Practice Spelling

Spending time with our kids isn’t just a job; it’s an adventure, like exploring the fun world of spelling. At home, we’ve made spelling practice a daily habit, turning it into a loved part of our learning time. This keeps the boys curious and helps them see learning as a fun journey instead of a boring task. So, join us as we make spelling one of our favorite activities, turning every moment into a treasured family memory!

1. Finding Your Monthly Spelling Words

The first step in our spelling journey begins with finding the words that challenge us. Here’s where the magic happens! To make this process relevant and relatable, we turn to our favorite books. My son Cash, for instance, loves his Star Wars book. As we read, we jot down any words that give us a run for our money. This not only helps in identifying words that need practice but also makes reading a collaborative and interactive experience.

How We Do It:

Choose a Favorite Book: Let your child pick a book they love.
Read Together: As you read, keep an eye out for tricky words.
List the Words: Write down words your child struggles with.

By incorporating books they adore, children are more motivated to tackle spelling. When they see those words again, they’re eager to conquer them!

Our Routine:

Morning Review: Start the day by reviewing the words on the bulletin board.
Spelling Practice Chart: The Boys go through this same routine with each other to build rote memory skills. They enjoy challenging each other, and they might not realize it… But they’re learning double the words! All you need for this step are index cards, a chart routine, and a small journal.
Interactive Games: Incorporate games like word matching or bingo to reinforce learning.
Creative Writing: Encourage your child to use the words in their own stories or sentences.
