Money Week Post 1

Okay, so if you're worried that I'm going to spend the next week sharing some "Get-Rich-Quick" Internet hype... don't. I'm not about to do that, mostly because nothing I have done successfully was quick. Instead, my goal with this week is to take you back in time with me to 10 years ago. Back when I had just left my job (already) and needed to re-establish an income while raising two kids in a new town. Tomorrow begins the #7PostStoryACKL on exactly what I did when I first started from my couch and how I got to where I am now, only working 12 hours a week but making a full-time online (mostly passive) income, as I stand in my kids' school workroom wearing fairy wings.. because I can. And I share this because I know there are a lot of you wanting to be right there with me.

Money Week Post 2

Let us reflect for a minute on how much this robe, in these pictures made me on the Internet… Thanks of course going to @kelseajoannphotography for helping my vision come together and taking all these beautiful hospital pictures… So that very first blog post I wrote on “How to Pack Your Hospital Bag” that went viral, included this robe and an Amazon Link to it. Enter my very first dip into affiliate marketing and how pretty little pictures on a blog can spark a very big business plan. For this week, which I’m calling “Money Week” I’m going to walk you through exactly what I did from the moment I left this hospital room to now. There is no get rich quick about it. The point is the opposite. It is consistent, reliable, and has been self-sustaining since this very day.

Money Week Post 3

This is us making money from the couch. Blogging is obviously the cornerstone of my online endeavor, but you don’t have to have a blog right when you come home from the hospital, geared up to work from home. I started my blog during Wyatt’s pregnancy and it took off from there. But I also did a lot of things outside of blogging, from the couch while watching Daniel Tiger with two babies. We’ll call this Savings Income, or as many refer to it, App Income, which actually isn’t income at all, but discounts, savings, and coupons. I did this the most to generate a reduced spending total that I could count as my financial contribution. Through my profile link, you can read up on all my favorite apps and how I used them by clicking on the Week 2 Image.

Okay, so far we have Affiliate Income and Savings/App Income but let’s now cover Referral Income. This is when you recommend a membership of sorts and then get a kickback when someone signs up. Like you’ve got a secret but then let people in on it loud and proud… We were able to do a lot of this and you actually can too. It started with my wedding blog and rolled off those savings apps. The main one of course is Ebates, which is now Rakuten. I still love to recommend this one and have worked it into every blog post or ebook since for both brides and moms. Next are any clothing resell websites, like Poshmark, where I sell all our outgrown baby clothes and then buy the new ones (see how that’s producing that “Savings” Income) If you go through my profile link and visit Poshmark, make a purchase using my code: COTTONKANDILIFE we BOTH get $10

If you know Cash, you know he’s not shy or quiet for that matter. Just take a tour down his hashtag #stuffcashsays or #cashmankelso to catch his antics. That said, he became quite a little blogging all-star, not that he knew it, by giving me so much to write about. After the success of that affiliate link-filled blog post, I knew I was on to something, and started reviewing products on my blog that Cash loved. I did Product Reviews and linked those products in posts called “Round Ups” which I’m sure you’ve seen before on Pinterest. Once that kicked off, Cash and I were receiving box after box in the mail from brands wanting us to review them. We weren’t making a whole lot of money on that, but we could then link it to Amazon!

Here are the first few round-ups we did:

Money Week Post 6

Wyatt’s first job, rather Product Review as a baby brand rep. Once word got out on the internet that I was doing product reviews and you could send us a product, we were flooded. I then had a fellow blogger friend tell me, “You know you can charge for reviews, right?” I obviously didn’t… but now I do. And so that became our first “Paid Blog Content” button in my blog store. This changed literally everything about how I did blogging and business online. My first paid content post was for these amazing Boppy Bibs that were super easy to clean. In all my reviews, even the paid ones I always gave my honest opinion. And some products we returned and didn’t write the review for because it just wasn’t a good fit. Whenever you’re branching into the world of internet reviews you must have your integrity intact and disclose when you’re being paid. It’s a whole thing you have to legally disclose on your blog. Happy to help you write your disclaimer if you go this route…

Money Week Post 7

So here we are at the end of the week and I’ve covered Savings, Referrals, Affiliates, and Paid Content Income. What’s next? You guessed it, SALES. I started my Etsy Shops after we moved into this house and Wyatt was my best little baby model. This little hat went into my Etsy Shop, Cotton N’ Kandi as the very first listing for newborn photography props. I hadn’t been selling yarn products ever before, but it was also something I could do very easily from my couch. We all know those super late nights when you’re awake with a baby. I was stuck under a boppy for 3 years and this was a perfect creative outlet! Soon enough I was able to work the Etsy Shops into the blog and this whole web of a business started forming together… I’ll explain it all next week, in Blogging Week.
