Every year, as the hustle of the holiday season fades into memory and the quiet chill of January settles in, I find comfort in knowing there’s a special celebration just around the corner—the birthday of my youngest son, Wyatt. We’ve established treasured traditions that make this time of year a beacon of warmth in the cold winter months. The fourth week of January is a time when our family’s focus turns to Wyatt. This week I’m going to share some fun stories including how he got his name, his birth story, and of course all my favorite things about him. We’ll then take a tiny tour through some of his past birthday parties. This week will also be FULL of beautiful pictures my sister took the week he was born, so thank you very much for that @kelseajoanphoto.

Wyatt getting his name is one of my favorites… My sister and I were both planning our weddings at the same time, in 2010. Her wedding was in 2011, and ours in 2012. We were all sitting around my dining room table one evening, doing an assortment of wedding projects with my Grandma Joan. From her busied hands she looked up, waited for all the bustling to stop and everyone to notice her, then quite confidently she announced, “I hope if one of you has a boy, you name him Wyatt.” And that was that. In honor of Grandma Joan, he got his name. With William being a traditional firstborn name for four generations on Billy’s side, that name went to Cash. When the time came to announce our second baby was a boy we told Grandma Joan first, and she of course cried her famous tears of joy.

This will forever be one of my favorite pictures captured by my sister, @kelseajoannphoto. It was the moment Cash met Wyatt. This memory lives permanently in my mind thanks to this picture and his reaction being caught when we told Cash, “Meet your little brother!” The best gift ever given, completing our family. Read his full Birth Story through the Link below. You can also see all the pictures Kelsea took that day in the hospital. It’s a pretty amazing gallery, although I know I’m biased. 😉
Wyatt’s Birth Story: The Story of Wyatt Nickolas Coach
Week 4 | Post 4
Special Delivery! Written 1/24/15: Wyatt Nickolas Coach Kelso joins the team on 1/23/15 at 12:54pm. He weighed in at a whopping 9 lb 2oz and announced himself to the world fast and furious with only 7 hours of labor. The difference between him and his brother is already so noticeable and he intends to remain his own man of his own ways! He is our Wy-Guy, our Flash, our Boss Man, and our Coach Baby… always keeping us in check and making sure we’re all towing the line! On the day he was born, the newspaper said he would “be someone who makes a difference” and it was already right!
Week 4 | Post 5
Wyatt, just like Cash has two middle names. The first is Nickolas, after my brother. The second is Coach, which has a bit of a longer story… Cash’s third name is Cash, after William Jacob. Both boys hold a third name that represents the main event in my life I transitioned out of to focus wholeheartedly on them. After having Cash I retired from the Wedding Industry (as you’ve learned all this month) so that he would be the only dollar I was chasing. As soon as Wyatt entered the picture, I resigned from all my volleyball coaching positions, including Varsity, Club, and personal training. I had no more championships to chase. #MomWinning

Of course, the irony is not lost on us over here. Cash, we call Cash, but we didn’t want to call Wyatt, Coach, just in case it put too much athletic pressure on him. Funny enough, coaching is EXACTLY what I do most with Wyatt, which we of course LOVE beyond measure. He’s yet to meet something he’s unwilling to dive into and try out from golfing to water skiing, baseball to basketball, and beyond. In fact, he rarely isn’t doing something recklessly athletic. He currently wants to be a PE Teacher or Personal Trainer when he grows up.
Week 4 | Post 7
Wyatt’s favorite things revolve around sports. His idols include Basketball players, everyone from Dude Perfect and his Dad, with whom he’s been golfing with since before he could walk. We’ve had some epic Birthday Parties to celebrate Wyatt and his favorite things over the years. Last year was his biggest fan favorite, a Dude Perfect Birthday Party. When he turned four is was a FORE! Golf Party and a Floor is Lava Obstacle Course in the Garage when he turned six.
