Not everything is as it seems, especially when you look into the Mirror of Erised… For Cash’s 10th (9 3/4) Birthday, he challenged me to create an entire Escape Room themed around Harry Potter. AND IT WAS A JOY but took me months to get right! I’m going to walk you through this whole party, clue by clue, and maybe your little wizards will want to dive into this Party with Wands-a-blazing. This post covers one clue of the ten we did.

Mirror of Erised | Clue 9
This was a fun clue to do and honestly, I might not have thought of it if I didn’t already have this standing mirror. But I did, so I HAD to use it. If you’re familiar with the Mirror of Erised, you know it shows you what you most DESIRE, so obviously, that would be the answer to our Escape Room Clue.
I decorated this mirror with word-welded cutouts from my Etsy Shop, The Vintage Event. It is cut paper, not a decal, so I just taped it right on there and it wasn’t permanent… although that would be fitting since it’s my gym mirror 😉 The Glitter Star Banner is from my Etsy Shop as well.
To pull this off you need a few books to tape the code onto the spine of. In my Harry Potter Party Ebook, I have the printable for the spine code. Shhhh… they’re all reversed, so you can only read the codes in a mirror reflection. Oh, but it gets better…
The book spines align to spell the person you eliminate once reversed and decoded in the mirror, but how do you know the order? Math equations, of course. Each spine has an equation on it that equals 1-10. You then stack those ebooks in number order to spell the name of the person you will be eliminating. I love how our 5th-grade friends took the lead on this clue!
Clue 9 – Directions:
- You will need at least 10 vintage books, 1-inch thick spines
- You can also use textbooks or any school books.
- You will need a Mirror for the Mirror of Erised
- Cut out the 1″ Coded letter with the equation attached.
- The image is flipped so it is only decodable through a mirror
- Attach each equation/Code combo to the book spines
- The equation when solved tells which order to put the books in, so don’t separate it from its code.
- Cut/Frame the 4″x6″ Directions for players/kids/wizards.
How to Pass this Clue:
- Players hold books to the mirror and solve the math equations
- This tells them which order to arrange the books.
- Arrange all books in the proper order to spell the coded name
- Decode the letters through the mirror with the chart.
- Eliminate Dumbledore
- Move on to Clue 10
