Are you planning a family adventure to Mt. Hood Skibowl? If so, you’re in for a treat! We took #MySweetandSticky there thanks to their Aunt & Uncle gifting it to them for Christmas, and they STILL talk about it! We should definitely do it again, and so should you. This stunning winter wonderland offers a ton of activities to keep both kids and adults entertained.
We didn’t do all of them but focused on one of the highlights, Cosmic Tubing. It is such a unique experience that combines the thrill of tubing with an exciting light and sound show. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.
About Mt. Hood Skibowl
Mt. Hood Skibowl is nestled in the heart of the Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon. Known for its diverse range of winter sports, it is a popular destination for families looking to enjoy the snowy season. From skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing and tubing, there is something for everyone.
Location and Accessibility

- Distance from Portland: Approximately 1.5 hours by car
- Parking: Ample parking is available on-site, but it can fill up quickly during peak times, so plan to arrive early.
Cosmic Tubing: A Must-Do Activity
Cosmic Tubing at Mt. Hood Skibowl is unlike any other tubing experience. It takes place in the evening, under an array of colorful LED lights, synchronized to a lively music soundtrack. I, unfortunately, didn’t get enough pictures of the tubing after dark because I only brought my phone. The pictures I did get aren’t great, but you can tell by their website that it is legit.
What to Expect
- Session Times: Cosmic Tubing sessions typically run from late afternoon into the night. Check the Skibowl website for current times and availability.
- Age and Height Requirements: There is a 36-inch height requirement for tubing. Children must be able to ride in their own tube and not in a lap or with another participant.
- Safety Gear: Helmets are recommended, especially for younger children, and can be rented on-site. You can see that the boys are wearing the typical snow gear. Boots were key. I noticed my toes would drag as we went down the hill.
- Tubes for Sledding: You need to haul a tube up the belt yourself. There are singles and doubles.
- Safety Rules: At the top of the bet, there is a sign telling you all the rules and guidelines.
Tips for a Great Experience

- Arrive Early: To secure your spot and avoid long lines, it’s best to arrive at least 30 minutes before your session begins. You can see how long this line is behind Cash as he’s on the conveyor belt.
- Stay Hydrated: Keep water and snacks on hand to keep energy levels up, especially if you plan to spend several hours tubing.
- Reservations and advanced purchasing of tickets will be required for all guests.
Other Family Activities at Skibowl
Beyond Cosmic Tubing, Mt. Hood Skibowl offers a variety of activities that families can enjoy together. We didn’t do these ourselves, but I know they’re very popular.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Skibowl boasts the largest night skiing area in the United States, with slopes suitable for all skill levels. Lessons are available for beginners, making it an excellent opportunity for kids to learn how to ski or snowboard.
Snowshoeing and Hiking
For those who prefer a slower pace, snowshoeing and winter hiking trails provide a peaceful way to explore the beauty of Mt. Hood. Rentals are available, and guided tours can also be arranged.
Adventure Park
During the day, the Skibowl Adventure Park offers an array of winter activities, including a kids’ play area, ziplines, and more.
