1. Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur: The Hot Dog That Wasn’t a Hit

Our first stop was the famed Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, a tiny stand that holds a legendary status for its hot dogs. Tucked away like a hidden gem, it promised a taste of the “World’s Best Hotdog.” My Sweet & Sticky approached with skepticism, and truthfully, it didn’t quite meet their lofty expectations. While this culinary staple didn’t win their hearts, it did serve as an important lesson in culinary adventures: sometimes, the journey is more flavorful than the destination.

2. Kaffitar: Chasing the Black Licorice Latte

Next up was Kaffitar, where I discovered the Black Licorice Latte—a coffee creation so enchanting, I’ve been dreaming about it ever since. It was the kind of drink that lingers in your mind like a sweet memory, and I found myself chasing that vacation coffee high long after we returned home.

Around lunchtime, we set off on a two-and-a-half-hour stroll around Reykjavik. It’s the perfect way to really feel the city’s vibe. We skipped the paid tour and I made up our own, focusing on stuff my kids would actually enjoy. Think sweet and sticky treats. We steered clear of the pricey cheese and wine, and didn’t bother with long lines. Between tasty bites, we ducked into souvenir shops and discovered all sorts of cool little treasures.

3. Brauð & Co: Sticky Buns and Pretzel Croissants

Everyone online had the same tip about Brauð & Co—get there early! The line was longer than any other, but it was totally worth the wait. My kids gobbled up sticky buns bigger than their heads before I could even take a photo. I treated myself to the most amazing pretzel croissant ever, while Billy enjoyed a chocolate chip croissant. The bakery was a delightful mix of sweet smells and happy faces.

4. Valdis Ice Cream: Rye Bread Cones

At Valdis Ice Cream, we discovered the flavor everyone’s buzzing about online, and it was both unique and tasty—Lava (rye) Bread Ice Cream. I couldn’t resist grabbing two while we were there. It tasted like cake batter mixed with vanilla ice cream and bits of lava bread.

5. Sandholt Bakery: A Pastry Paradise

Sandholt Bakery was the spot where all our pastry dreams came to life. They had everything from pastry pretzels to custard tortes and lemon curd, and every bite was a flavor explosion. To balance out all that sweetness, I got myself a gigantic chickpea salad, which, not surprisingly, was the best I’ve ever had.

6. Perlan: Dining with a View

We wrapped up our day at Perlan for dinner in the dome, where the boys enjoyed Appelsín, a fizzy orange drink that Icelanders have loved since the 1950s.
