I’m thrilled to take you along on the Kelso family’s recent adventure to Iceland—a journey filled with wonder, laughter, and a sprinkle of chaos that only comes from traveling with kids. Buckle up and grab a cup of cocoa because this is going to be a sweet ride. Travel to Iceland with me through our incredible itinerary.
Why Travel to Iceland?
We embarked on this trip to attend a family wedding, but it quickly transformed into the adventure of a lifetime. From Viking tales to bubbling geysers, Iceland is a realm where myth and magic blend seamlessly. And if you’re anything like us, juggling two kids, you’ll appreciate the welcoming embrace of Iceland’s culture and the sheer ease of traveling with kids here.
The Journey Begins: Icelandic Air Experience
Let me start by saying, the journey to Iceland was a breeze! Our experience with Icelandic Air was nothing short of delightful. From the bottomless orange soda that kept the boys entertained to the adorable stuffed puffins they handed out, the seven-hour flight zipped by in a cloud of fluffy clouds and giggles. It was the perfect prelude to our time in the land of fire and ice.
Day 1: Viking World Breakfast & Giantess Cave
Our first day kicked off with a hearty breakfast at Viking World. Imagine starting your day with the kind of feast the Vikings themselves might have enjoyed—minus the sea spray! The boys were entranced by the tales of sea voyages and legendary battles, their eyes wide with awe as they wandered through the museum.
Next, we ventured to the Giantess Cave, a place where folklore comes alive. Nestled in the seaside town of Keflavik, this whimsical spot captured the boys’ imaginations as they listened to the story of the gentle giantess said to live there. With its cozy nooks and crannies, the cave is a perfect spot for kids to explore and let their imaginations run wild.
Day 2: Reykjavik Walking Tour & The Perlan
Celebrating Grammy’s birthday in Reykjavik was a memorable experience! Our walking tour through the city was filled with charming streets, vibrant murals, and laughter. We stopped for a sweet treat (or four) at a local bakery where the boys’ faces lit up like Christmas morning when they saw the line of pastries.
Reykjavik’s blend of the old and new is captivating, and the boys found plenty of playgrounds to burn off energy while we soaked in the city’s eclectic vibe. Walking through Reykjavik felt like flipping through a storybook, each page more colorful and intriguing than the last.
After leaving Reykjavik, we headed to the famous Perlan Museum. We checked out the Ice Tunnels and even sat on an Ice Throne before grabbing dinner in the dome. The kids were really into the Ice Tunnels, amazed by the huge walls of ice that seemed to tell secrets from old glaciers. Sitting on the Ice Throne was a big hit, too.
Dinner in the dome was something special. While we ate, we enjoyed the stunning views of Reykjavik with the sunset painting the sky pink and orange. My boys’ laughter mixed with the sound of more orange soda clinking in fancy glasses was magical.
Day 3: Caves of Hella & Lava Tunnel
On day three, we dove into the mysterious Caves of Hella. The boys, clad in their Sherpas, were ready to tackle the underground world of Iceland. The caves are a perfect mix of adventure and education, sparking curiosity in our young explorers as they learned about the natural history of these ancient formations.
Next up was The Lava Tunnel, an exciting hike through one of Iceland’s coolest lava tubes. Walking through the tunnel felt like entering a whole new world, a mix of shadows and light where you could see the Earth’s fiery core. The boys couldn’t stop chatting excitedly, their imaginations running wild just like the lava once did.
Day 4: Geyser Day! Lava Bread Making Tour
Geyser Day was a highlight, and let me tell you, nothing prepares you for the awe of watching the earth come to life! The boys’ eyes were saucers as the geysers erupted, sending plumes of steam skyward. It was a day filled with oohs and aahs, and plenty of laughs as the boys tried to predict each eruption.
Our food tour adventure took a delicious turn with a Lava Bread Making Tour. We learned the traditional method of baking bread using geothermal heat, a sweet and sticky experience that left us with warm hearts and fuller bellies.
Day 5: Rest Day- Geothermal Area & Selfoss Swimming Pool
By day five, we all needed a breather, so we took it easy with a visit to a geothermal area. We got to watch one of Iceland’s oldest Geysers go sky high and boil an egg in the geothermal pool. Yes, they got to eat it!
Later, we splashed our way through the Selfoss Swimming Pool, a family-friendly oasis with slides and fun around every corner. It was the perfect way to relax and recharge before diving back into our Icelandic adventure.
Day 6: South Coastline Waterfalls
This was the Wedding Day for us, so you’ll see us dressed up in all our pictures. The Happy Couple planned this whole day for us with a bus tour along the South Coastine from Waterfalls to Black Sand Beaches. The south coastline of Iceland is like nothing else on Earth—a place where waterfalls cascade down cliffs like liquid ribbons. We chased rainbows at Seljalandsfoss and marveled at the power of Skógafoss. The boys were in awe, their little faces pressed against the glass as we drove through this breathtaking landscape.
Day 7: Whale Museum, Reykjavik Part 3
Our last day was a mix of learning and adventure. The Whale Museum in Reykjavik was a big hit with the boys. They couldn’t get enough of the life-sized models and cool displays. Their excitement rubbed off on us, and we left with a new love for these ocean giants.
As we wandered around Reykjavik, we stumbled upon some hidden gems and cozy cafes, enjoying our final bites of the city’s lively vibe. We wrapped up the day with another stroll down Rainbow Road and indulged in even more ice cream than we did on Day 2.
Day 8: Departure Day- Reykjavik Part 4 & Keflavik Part 2
As we prepared to leave, we squeezed in one last stroll through Reykjavik. Our hearts were full, our minds brimming with memories as sweet and sticky as the day we set off.
Our farewell to Iceland was bittersweet, as all goodbyes should be. As we took off from Keflavik, we carried with us the stories and laughter of our journey. I was eager to share them with you and perhaps inspire your own family adventure to this land of fire and ice.
