What to Do on Day 7 in Iceland: The Last Day

Hey there, fellow adventurers! It’s Kandice here from A Cotton Kandi Life, back with tales from our Icelandic escapade. If you’ve been following along, you know that traveling with kids is an adventure in itself. My two boys, lovingly referred to as My Sweet & Sticky, are always up for new experiences. Today, I’m diving into the details of Day 7 in Iceland, where we mix a bit of culture, some sweet treats, and a dash of art. Grab your travel mugs and let’s hit the road!

Farewell Breakfast at Hotel Grimsborgir

8:45 AM – Off we go! We left our cozy house and headed to Hotel Grimsborgir. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that a good breakfast can set the tone for the entire day. This farewell breakfast was bittersweet because, well, Iceland has been nothing short of magical. The hotel serves a breakfast that’s as close to perfection as you can get—think freshly baked bread, Icelandic skyr, and enough coffee to fuel a small army of moms.

10:00 AM – With full bellies and hearts, we said goodbye to Hotel Grimsborgir. It was time to hit the road towards our next adventure, the Whales of Iceland.

Exploring Whales of Iceland

11:00 AM – The Whales of Iceland exhibit is a must-see, especially if you have kids who are entranced by the ocean. Trust me, when you walk into this place, it feels like stepping into a blue, underwater wonderland. My Sweet & Sticky were wide-eyed, and I’ll admit, so was I! The exhibit features 23 life-sized models of whales that make you feel like you’re swimming alongside them.

We caught the free tour that came with our admission, and it was both educational and interactive. The boys loved the tactile exhibits where they could touch and learn. It’s not every day you can high-five a whale! The tour guide was fantastic, providing just the right mix of facts and fun. Did you know that the blue whale is the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth? Mind-blowing, right?

12:30 PM – We bid adieu to our giant friends and made our way to our next stop, Þúfa, also known as Tourist Hill.

Climbing Þúfa – Tourist Hill

12:45 PM – After a refreshing 12-minute walk, we found ourselves at Þúfa. It’s an outdoor installation created by artist Ólöf Norda, and it’s open 24 hours a day, free of charge. The boys loved the spiral pathway leading up the hill. Once at the top, the view was spectacular. You can see the city sprawled out beneath you, and there’s just something so peaceful about standing up there with the wind in your hair. Plus, it’s a great way to let the kids burn off some energy before our next sugary stop.

Sweet Treats at Omnom Chocolate Ice Cream Shop

1:10 PM – If there’s one thing you shouldn’t miss in Reykjavík, it’s the Omnom Chocolate Ice Cream Shop. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a vibrant mix of colors and designs—think surreal pop art meets Nordic whimsy. My Sweet & Sticky were immediately drawn to the fantastical creatures adorning the walls.

We indulged in some of their famous chocolate ice cream, which is an experience in itself. The chocolate isn’t your typical bar; instead, it comes in geometric shards that are as beautiful as they are delicious. Each bite was like a little piece of heaven, melting in your mouth. And let’s be honest, watching the kids’ chocolate-covered smiles was worth every sticky finger.

1:20 PM – With sugar-induced grins, we reluctantly left Omnom, but not before stocking up on some chocolate to bring home. Trust me, the Omnom Krunch chocolate bars are a hit with everyone!

Artistic Inspiration at the Super Mario Bros Wall Mural

1:45 PM – Our next stop was a quick drive-by to see the Super Mario Bros Wall Mural by Juan Pictures Art. Located on Hringbraut, this mural is a fun nod to the iconic video game that I grew up with, and now my kids enjoy. We drove by too fast to take pictures, but marveled at the artistry. It’s incredible how street art can brighten up a space and bring a bit of nostalgia to the forefront.

Wrapping Up with Lunch at KRISP Restaurant

After our mural adventure, we headed for a late lunch at KRISP Restaurant. This place is perfect for families, offering a menu that merges local flavors with kid-friendly options. Plus, they have a play area where the kids can let loose while you sip on a well-deserved coffee. It was the perfect spot to reflect on our whirlwind day and our amazing time in Iceland.

Day 7 in Iceland was a beautiful blend of exploration, education, and indulgence. From saying goodbye with a hearty breakfast to being awed by whales, climbing hills, savoring chocolate, and appreciating art, our itinerary was packed with memorable moments. Which is exactly what we did, very early the next morning. Goodbye Iceland. You were magical.
